Best camera and lens for Hawaii.

Oct 18, 2017

Our first trip to Hawaii will be in May. I am looking into a lighter weight camera . I bought the Canon 6 D last year, great camera, but heavy, especially with the 28-105 L lens. I am looking to replace my crop sensor Canon ( I miss the range and can't afford the high price tag of the lenses for the full frame camera) and was thinking of the Canon 80 D. I was curious as to what might be the best lens to take in the landscapes of Hawaii and a good all around lens to take in the beauty of the islands. I have even considered the Sony A6000, which is lighter and friends love it. The Canon lenses that I have are 50 1.8 ,the Canon 70-300, 28-135 which came with my original Canon 30D.

Thanks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Canon EOS 30D Sony a6000

I have 6D, 80D. They are about same weight.

I took Canon M5 with 11-22 and 55-250 STM(with adapter) to Kauai last May.

I also took 6D with 24-70 f/2.8 II which is heaviest set I have.

Images from M5 set are so good and I'd love to take M5 set instead of my best 6D set anywhere, anytime.

So, if you plan to buy a new camera, consider M5(or M6).

Did Italy this summer with a 6D/40mm only and really glad I kept it minimal. Wasn't perfect all the time, but good enough most of the time and better almost all the time.

Some winners in my Gallery, I think.

Completely agree - if you worried about size/weight then M5/6 is way to go. They are tiny.

mine does not compare to my 5dsr and 1dx (surprise!) but is still great to use, has better video and good enough stills.

lenses: on FF I mainly used 24-105 and never felt I'd missed out.

I agree with this. I have an 80D and it is not really light weight.

An M5 or an SL2 (200D) might be worth considering.

Otherwise, G7x mkII or maybe G1x mkIII if you don't want the camera to get in the way.

Maybe the new G1x mkIII

Consider renting if it is just a need for this one vacation.

I still keep my T2i for times when I want to travel light. I would consider adding the SL2 and wide lenses for travel. There is no way I would get rid of my 6D. It can serve as a travel camera with a lighter, wide prime.

I found the wildlife in Hawaii to be very skittish. I took a lot of careful stalking to get decent photos, especially of birds and lizards, and I had the Tamron 150-600 II. I guess, as always, it depends on what you intend to photograph. If you want to get a picture of "Hawaii", you'll need a space shuttle.

If you are referring to M5/M6, then yes. The M10 and I assume M100 was the base version of Canon M range, whereas the M5 is currently the top of M range.

Depending on what you want it for, the M5 cannot compete with any vaguely recent DSLR for AF, particularly in low light. The IQ in good conditions is good - as good or better than my 70D, but the 70D runs rings around it for speed of AF. The M5 + 18-150EF-M lens is a very nice compact lightweight travel option though, as long as you recognise and work within it's limitations.

I use my M5 as a backup body for my 70D and lightweight option when I don't want to lug around a backpack. I think from memory that M5 + 18-150 is only slightly heavier than either 70D/80D/6D OR 24-105L and vastly smaller and lighter than the larger body + 24-105L.

I have been using and loving the SL2! If I don't want to pack my 5D MKIII then the SL2 fits the bill. 24mm pancake and 40mm pancake make an awesome duo for a light kit. If you need wide and light the 10-18 is great!

I agree here. The SL2 is an amazing camera for a lightweight little body. I like the lenses mentioned and I have also used the 18-135 and 70-300 nano lenses with it. I am quite happy with it has an alternative to my 5d mk iv.

As some have suggested, try to limit your photo gear so you can truly enjoy the Islands. Kauai is our favorite, with Maui next, I haven't been to the Big Island since I was 10 years old but it really is the "Big Island". If your flight passes the windward side of Oahu, try to capture the view of the Ko'olau Mountains as they seem to erupt from the Pacific. Despite ever-present tourism, Hawaii is an experience which may leave a lasting emotional impact on you, it has with us.
