There are a lot of fun flavors to explore in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, but one of the most unique is Kat Saka's Kettle's Outpost Popcorn Mix recipe. It's hard to stroll past Kat Saka's Kettle in Black Spire Outpost without ogling over the colorful array of red and purple popcorn glowing under a red lamp. We even noticed in Star Wars The Bad Batch Omega eyeing a large bowl of similar looking popcorn, called Mantell Mix. Popcorn is very much a part of Star Wars canon!

On the menu, Outpost Popcorn Mix is described as a "colorful blend of sweet and spicy flavors." Intrigued, we tried a bag during a visit to Batuu and loved it! The sweet purple popcorn had a flavor like Trix cereal, more specifically the "grape-ity purple" flavor. The mildly spicy, red popcorn are just as delightful, resembling a sweet, cinnamon red hot candy.

Loving this creative and tasty mix, we set out on a mission to discover how Kat Saka makes this awesome popcorn. We didn't want to have to be in a Disney park to enjoy it! While researching a sweet popcorn glaze, we came across a product called Glaze Pop, made by Gold Medal. We don't know if Kat Saka's Kettle is using this product, but Grape Purple and Red Hot Cinnamon are among the available flavors, so we gave it a whirl!

Speaking of whirl, in order to cook the popcorn, we used a Whirley-Pop stovetop popcorn popper. This pot, complete with a stirring handle, claims to make perfect popcorn on your stovetop in just 3 minutes. This did, indeed, make the perfect popcorn quickly every time!

One unique aspect of Kat Saka's Kettle‘s popcorn is the kernel shape. We learned that, unlike the typical butterfly popcorn shape, this one is called mushroom popcorn. When popped, the popcorn looks like little balls. We found a mushroom popcorn by Amish Country Popcorn, and it turned out to make the perfect mushroom popcorn we were looking for!

Instructions

  • Make the Grape Purple Popcorn! Add 1 tablespoon coconut oil to the Whirley-Pop stovetop popcorn maker and heat on medium heat (do not preheat the burner before adding the coconut oil).

  • Immediately after the coconut oil has melted, add 1/4 cup popcorn kernels to the Whirley-Pop and sprinkle the Grape Purple Glaze Pop on top of the popcorn kernels. Close the Whirley-Pop lid and turn the crank constantly until the sound of popping popcorn slows*, then remove from the heat.

  • *Note: We noticed, from start to finish, it takes about 3 minutes for the popcorn to pop. After a couple minutes of stirring, the popping starts slow. Then, there’s a lot of popping similar in sound to the grand finale of a Disney fireworks show! We removed ours from the heat immediately after this “grand finale,” then continued to turn the Whirley-Pop for another 10 seconds to prevent from burning.

  • Give the Whirley-Pop a little shake (left and right, not up and down) to loosen up the popcorn from sticking together, then dump the popcorn out of the Whirley-Pop into a large bowl.

  • Once cooled, wash the Whirley-Pop with warm soapy water. Immediately dry completely with a towel.

  • Make the red hot cinnamon popcorn using the same method as above, except add 1 tablespoon coconut oil, then 1/4 cup mushroom popcorn kernels and the Red Hot Cinnamon Glaze Pop.

  • Once popped, remove the red popcorn from the Whirley-Pop and season with chili powder and salt. Add it to the bowl of purple popcorn. Mix it together with a spoon and serve.

This recipe worked great and tasted amazing. I did add the sugar and chili powder mix, but I will say it is missing the fruity citrus flavor. I will be making a new batch with new sugar I found online. It has been reported that the flavoring cited at Disney is “blueberry lemon pound cake” and the red flavor is “chili lime”. I am making my own pound cake flavored sugar to be added with lemon and blueberry sugar. I will combine the cinnamon (Chile) with lime flavored sugar. Let’s see how this turns out.

The lemon and lime sugar def added the missing “fruity” flavor. I added grape instead of the blueberry sugar since the blueberry didn’t really shine through. The pound cake extract flavor added to sugar was over powering as well. It’s most likely not needed. I think the grape plus lemon sugar along with the cinnamon and lime sugar is perfect. The chili powder/salt mix was also perfect.

The sad thing is that Disney has mishandled Star Wars so much that they are not smart enough to call this popcorn mix "Mantel Mix" just like it is referred to on the Bad Batch tv show. That's pretty bad when you can make such an obvious mistake.😐

Hi Kevin! According to the Star Wars Wookiepedia, The Bad Batch planned to feature "Outpost Mix." They changed the name to "Mantell Mix" after deciding that the name "Outpost Mix" should be exclusive to Batuu.

So, perhaps it's similar to how different regions in the US give foods different names? Examples:
      Pancakes/flapjacks/johnnycakes; Sub/hero/hoagie; Stuffing/dressing.

I had to comment just to say, this recipe is so close to perfect. You’re missing one thing!

Add a generous helping of chili powder and salt to the cinnamon popped popcorn, shake well! Then mix the two flavors together.

Trust me, I worked for the mouse and had this popcorn frequently while there.
